Na de onafhankelijkheid van Indonesi\u00eb in 1949 wilde Nederland Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea behouden. Dit leidde tot een conflict met Indonesi\u00eb dat claimde dat Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea bij Indonesi\u00eb hoorde.
